Terrible Two's - Janie has words with her daughters - March 24, 2011
It's the terrible twos - that's two weeks for kittens.
Here's Janie having words with her daughters as they start to creep about. She doesn't want them wandering too far away.
First it's little Amy's turn, then Topaz gives her mom a lot of lip.
When Janie gets alert at the end of the video, that's just my cat Cotton behind the door - wondering what all the commotion is about!

Meet the new kids - Monday, March 21, 2011
So, we let the hissy mom have a quiet night with the kids in her new room. The lovely all-black Sashi - she's funny. Must be the hormones 'cuz she can't tell what mood she's in. She comes up to me seeking attention, she loves pets, chin-scratches, head-rubs, and has the elevator-butt going, but if you stop - HISS! She's still figuring things out. I think she kinda wants to be a lap cat.
While she's working that out, here's the intros to the new kids on the block:

Janie's Gems - Monday, March 21, 2011
Day 12 ... These are going to be some BIG cats. OMG I got a look at Gus's feet today (Graphite) and they are huge! They are all growing like weeds. Everyone's eyes are open now. They look so cute with their little ear flaps. Wait 'til their ears start growing and they get too big for their little kitten-heads!
Janie just darted out the door of her 'nursery' and chased Cotton around the kitchen island. All is well, but I don't think Cotton is going to camp outside her door anymore. Poor guy, he's surrounded by kittens on all sides and I think he's wishing he were an only cat.
As promised, here's new pictures & updates on weights:
Lucy (in the Sky with Diamonds) is a big 10.2oz
Amy (the Amethyst) is a WHOPPING 12.7oz! at just 12 days old
Gus (the Graphite grey with big paws) is 10.9oz
and last, but not least, tiny Topaz is 9.6oz
Janie won't be able to keep them huddled under covers much longer. Can't wait for them to start crawling around!

Hissy mom - Sunday, March 20th
Rained out at Pet Days today, but got to spend some time with all my fosters. Here's the current count: 2 moms, 9 kittens, separate nurseries, and a very confused Cotton sniffing at both doors.
Sashi, the new mom, seems to know only one vocalization - hissing. She's not mad or mean; that just seems to be her only way to communicate right now. She's hissing at me as she reaches up for head-butts and chin scratches. She's purring (but not as loudly as Janie). She's taking good care of the littles.
She's a Third Chance cat rescued by our shelter from a more overcrowed facility. Lucky girl.
Her litter has 3 boys (all black) - Topper, Cricket, and Earl. Can't tell them apart. 2 of them are just starting to open their eyes. Also part of the gang are two beautiful girls - Mia, a little siamese and Duffy, a dilute brown tabby with what might be an agouti coat. They're all just little balls of fluff right now. Everyone is healthy.
So, there will be NINE little kittens growing up around here for at least the next three weeks. Stay tuned. New pictures of everyone tomorrow.

New mom & 5 kittens - Saturday, March 19th
After a long day at OC Pet Days, went to the shelter & picked up a new Third-Chance foster mom-cat and her 5 little kittens (probably 4-5 days old). 3 boys, 2 girls.
Sashi (mom) is all black and a little scared but nice enough to let me pull her from the carrier & set her and the kids up in a nice room of their own.
I'll let them settle in before we try to take pictures. Besides, I'm beat from standing on the asphalt all day. Whew!

Sometimes you just need a hug - March 10, 2011
It's our 7th day ... We're getting so big! - Tuesday, March 15, 2011
The kittens begin their 7th day on earth today having all DOUBLED their birth weight!
Here's the formal introductions:
Here's the only boy in the bunch, dubbed Graphite for his beautiful dark gray color. He was the tiniest at birth at only 3.0 oz but is now a bouncing 8.1 oz!
He's clearly not happy about the weigh-in activity today, screaming for Mom.
He's the first kitten to show signs of eyes opening - there are little peek-a-boo spots already!
Since 'Graphite' is a big handle for a little boy, I think we'll call him 'Gus' for short.
The biggest baby at birth (3.9 oz, sorry Mom), our little cali/torbie is Amethyst, or Amy for short. She's now weighing in at a whopping 8.6 oz! At this rate, she'll be 2 lbs before you know it.
She looks a little like my cat Amy, who lived to be 23 years old. Here's hoping this little one gets such a long, long life.
She's the fiesty one ... usually greets me with a little baby hiss. Yes, that's HISS, not kiss. So funny to see little kittens hiss. LOL!
The inspiration for the names in this little came from the nose of this little girl. Dr M took one look at her and said, "Oh, we have to name this one Diamond!" She does have beautiful markings.
Diamond was 3.6 oz a week ago and now comes in at just almost double 7.1 oz.
Although who doesn't love diamonds, I think this one will be Lucy, as in 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'. She just looks more like a Lucy to me. She's pretty spunky, too.
Last, but certainly not least, is our teeny tiny torbie, Topaz.
Topaz was the tiniest girl, just 3.1 oz at birth. Although she has more than doubled her birth weight at a fabulous 6.7 oz now, she's still the littlest kit.
I can't come up with a cute nickname for 'Topaz', so if any of you out there have any ideas, I'm open...
